Lloyd Doggett - Fiscal Conservative?
Since I recently moved to Austin, I figured I would comment on my new Congressman, Lloyd Doggett, and his commitment, or lack thereof, to bringing down the federal deficit by eliminating earmarks. Thanks to Congressman Jeff Flake's 19 anti-pork amendments citizens can now truthfully analyze how committed their Congressman is to eliminating wasteful spending. For my previous comments on how other Congressman voted on these amendments see here and here.
Surprisingly, Congressman Doggett voted against 3 of 19 wasteful earmarks. I say surprisingly because Congressman Doggett is a left-wing Democrat and the average Democratic vote was only 0.55 votes out of 19. For whatever reason Congressman Doggett is against spending $229,000 on dairy education in Iowa, spending $180,000 for hydroponic tomato production in Ohio, and spending $1,000,000 on the Jason Foundation in Virginia (whatever that is) but, for instance, is for spending $500,000 on a swimming pool and giving $20,000,000 to a wood research institute. So Congressman Doggett, even though I will never vote for you, let me at least give you a bit of praise for voting against more of these earmarks than the majority of the Republican House delegation.
As to that point, as a conservative, it is disheartening to see 111 Republican (that is the party of small government, right?) House members vote against all 19 anti-pork amendments. What a disgrace.
