Henry Cuellar: Not a Moderate Spender
Henry Cuellar is a "moderate" Democrat from Texas. Congressman Cuellar currently represents the 28th district and models himself a middle of the road Democrat who wants to control spending.
If you follow politics, you hear the members of the Democratic party, such as Congressman Cuellar, claim they are the party of fiscally conservatism in America. They insist that they can eliminate the federal budget deficit if only you would vote for them in November. Never mind that the Democratic fix for the deficit is always to raise taxes. Of course they always say that they will not raise taxes (or if they do it's always going to be on those evil rich people) even though they end up raising them anyway. So if you take the Democrats at their word (a risky proposition) then the obvious solution is to cut government spending. It is simple math: the less you spend, the smaller the deficit. And since no one wants to cut entitlement (Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security) spending, the simplest way to cut spending is by eliminating earmarks. For my previous discussion on earmarks, click here.
So when Congressman Cuellar got 19 chances, courtesy of Congressman Flake of Arizona, to strip out earmarks for such things as a $1,000,000 for the Tourism Development Association in Kentucky, how many times did he vote for lower spending? Not a one. If fact, the Congressman's "Newsroom" section of his website is dominated by press releases calling to attention his success in spending your tax money, such as $300,000 for sidewalks. This just more evidence of hypocrisy from so-called fiscally conservative politicians. Just remember this the next time you are about to vote; just because someone says they will not waste your money, does not mean they will actually do it.
