The Conservative Criticism of Barack Obama

Barack Obama will be the nominee of the Democrat party in the upcoming presidential elections. Many, drawn by his charisma, will vote for him, not because they really know what he stands for, but because he has positioned himself to be the celebrity candidate of "hope and change." If voters want a president who is more like a celebrity than a leader, I truly fear for the future of America. Deciding who will be leader of the free world is a serious proposition and I would encourage all Americans to take the time and learn about the issues. For those voters who do truly look at the where the candidates stand on the issues, they should consider what the repercussions of an Obama presidency would be for America and the world. As such, here is an overview of some of the issues and the conservative criticism of Barack Obama on those issues.

The Message: Obama's message of hope and change is easy to criticize because it is typical empty political rhetoric. While the message may make some "feel good," it means little because it lacks any substance. What is everyone hoping to change to? Such questions are left unanswered probably because the answers are ones that, in general, the American people will not like.

Iraq and Terrorism: Obama and most of the Democrat party have painted themselves into a corner on Iraq. They have to oppose the war because their left-wing base is always against the use of American military force, but they cannot look weak and uninformed if they do not acknowledge the situation in Iraq has improved considerably. Unfortunately Obama seeks to withdraw American troops from Iraq and cede it to the Islamic fundamentalists that will surely take over the country if American troops were to leave. Simply put, Obama and the Democrats want to retreat in the face of America's enemies.

Iran: Obama wants unconditional talks with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the political leader of Iran. Iran is the single greatest threat to American interests worldwide. It oppresses its people, threatens Israel's destruction, pursues nuclear weapons, funds the terrorist group Hezbollah, and supplies men and materials to the insurgency in Iraq killing American soldiers. All in all it is safe to conclude that Iran is a total enemy of the United States. Yet Obama is willing to talk, without preconditions, with its President. If the leader of the free world were to meet with Ahmadinejad, the state of Iran would most assuredly say to the people of Iran "see even America realizes that we are in charge." This allows the leaders of Iran to consolidate their power and continue working toward their goal of bringing down America. In addition, such a message severely damages the efforts of Iranian dissents attempting to undermine and overthrow the regime.

Universal Health Care: Barack Obama wants the government to run the health care system. He wants the people that brought America such successful government programs as the Postal Service and Amtrak to be in charge of life and death decisions for all Americans. Many Americans are mad that health care and health insurance are so expensive today. Yet they do not take the time to realize the expense is the result of government mandates and red-tape which make providing health care expensive. These mandates reduce the supply of medical care because they raise the costs of providing it. If the rules and regulations in place now were eliminated the doctors and insurance companies would respond to the needs of their customers instead of the regulations, the price of medical care would decrease, and the supply would expand. Obama and the Democrats are opposed to such a solution because it bypasses the government, the one thing in which they truly believe. If you think government-run health care is a good idea, ask yourself of all the products the government provides today, which are you satisfied with? No doubt the list will be small. Ask yourself, do you really believe that the government will provide a better product than the health care we enjoy today?

Race: While Barack Obama himself has gone to some lengths to insist that he is not a "racial" candidate, several of his allies and surrogates have wasted little time is seeing any criticism of Obama as evidence of racism. Obama cannot have it both ways on this. Either he is a racial candidate or he isn't. Obama should insist that any criticism of him not be classified as racist, but instead answer those criticisms in turn on their merit.

Yet more troubling to many Americans is Obama's association with Reverend Jeremiah Wright. When it came to light that the Reverend repeatedly damned American on the pulpit, accused the United States government of creating the AIDS virus to devastate black society, and concluded that the 9/11 attacks were justified because America had it coming, many began to ask why Obama was a member of Wright's church for 20 years, why he did not challenge Wright when he publicly made the statements he did, and why did Obama view Wright as a mentor and father figure for so long. Obviously no presidential candidate can publicly agree with such extreme positions, but given the closeness of Obama to Wright and Obama's refusal to distance himself from Wright before he became a candidate for President, it seems more than fair to ask whether or not Obama really believes what Wright believes. The anger and hatred toward America, especially white America, the Reverend possesses is unfounded in the eyes of most Americans. Obama says that he is not a racial candidate, but his associations with those that believe everything is about race are more than troubling.

Taxes: Obama, just like almost all Democrats, wants to raise taxes. The reason conservatives oppose taxes is not that we seek to eliminate government in its entirety, but we believe the government already taxes the people too much and that money is wasted on programs and ideas that just do not work. In 2007, the United States Federal Government took in $2.5 trillion in taxes, but spent $2.7 trillion. That is trillion, with a "t." The numbers involved are so large they are really unfathomable to the human mind. Yet what does the average American get for that money? Sure the money provides for national defense and other necessary expenditures, but a large amount of the money is wasted on special interests and ineffective government programs. Conservatives simply want the government to use the money it already receives in an effective manner before politicians force America to give away more of their own money.

Conservatives disagree with Obama on almost every major issue: free trade, school vouchers, missile defense, guns etc. The list is long. An Obama presidency would be dangerous for America and the world. The failed liberal ideas Obama seeks to implement will not make this country better, but lead it more quickly down the path of socialism at home and weakness abroad. Obama's message may make many Americans "feel good," but the actual policies he supports have been proven by history to fail time and again.
