Armenian Genocide and the Iraq War
Recently Congressional Democrats made a push to hold a vote on a resolution condemning the massacre of Armenians in 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, the remnants of which constitute modern day Turkey. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that she decided to advance the legislation because the United States has a moral obligation to take a stand and declare the World War I-era killings of 1.5 million Armenians a genocide. But back in the 1980s Congress passed a resolution setting April 24 as a day of remembrance of the Armenian genocide. So you see America is already on record as condemning the 1915 killings.
So why did a new resolution warrant consideration? Simple, it is all about Iraq war politics. In fact, two-thirds of American supplies to troops in Iraq flow through Turkey and the question of Armenian genocide is a touchy subject with Turkey’s ruling political elite. If such a resolution were to pass, immediate repercussions, such as shutting off necessary supply lines, would be carried out by the Turkish government. Thankfully, due to the outrage expressed by Republicans and some clear thinking Democrats, Speaker Pelosi was forced to withdraw the resolution before it came to a vote.
Clearly the Democrats, after becoming unable to get the troops out of Iraq as they promised their base last year, and being complete failures in attempting to cut funding for the war in Iraq, tried to undermine the Iraq mission. Right now, the left in this country cannot afford for America to win in Iraq. They have invested too much time and effort in opposing the war that an American victory there would be politically devastating. Therefore, the Democrats in Congress have to find a way to keep American troops from winning in Iraq. Luckily sanity prevailed in this instance, but don’t think that this will be that last time the Democrat party will use its newfound power to try and force an American defeat.
