John Edwards - Hypocrite Extraordinaire
In case you didn’t notice, former Democrat Senator and former Vice-Presidential candidate John Edwards is running for president. Edwards has been able to tap into the jealously many people have towards others that make more money than they do. His campaign theme has been that there are two Americas; in his words there is “one America that does the work [and] another America that reaps the rewards.”
Such statements are a not too subtle way of saying that the government needs to take money and wealth from “rich Americans” and give it to less wealthy ones. But, like many Democrat politicians, Edwards believes that while some Americans should give up more money to the government to pay for more bureaucracy in Washington D.C., he himself should not or will not make the same sacrifices.
Edwards made millions as a trial lawyer in North Carolina suing doctors when an operation they performed did not succeed or complications arose. In many instances he took more of the damage award home than his client did. In other words, Edwards got rich by convincing juries to bankrupt doctors, while taking most of the spoils for himself. Such is common among liberal democrats. Those who cannot create wealth on their own find ways to take it from others.
Today, a closer look at the way Edwards lives his own life reveals that while he may talk like he is a champion of the poor, he certainly does not act like it.
First, Edwards lives in a 28,000 square foot house (roughly 80% of the size of a football field) in North Carolina. The main home has five bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths. It's connected by a covered walkway to an extension of the house that includes a handball court, an indoor pool and an indoor basketball court with a stage at one end. Nearby, the family has cleared space for a soccer field.
With a current building value of $4.3 million, the unfinished Edwards estate is already about $1 million more expensive than any other house in the county, according to tax records. It sits on land worth about $1.1 million.
No telling how much energy a house like that consumes on a daily basis, but that does not stop Edwards from presenting himself as a champion of global warming. But global warming hypocrisy aside, if Edwards believes that the rich and/or the government should give more to the poor, then why doesn’t he sell his ridiculously large house move into a modest apartment and donate the money from the sale to the poor? The reason he does not do that is because he does not particularly care about the poor, he just wants them to vote for him.
Second, Edwards has admitted he worked at a hedge fund to learn about poverty. That’s right; the self styled champion of the poor got paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by a hedge fund so that he could learn about the plight of the poor. Working at a hedge fund means you will learn a lot of things, but getting to know or even laying eyes on a poor person, is not one of them.
Third, when it finally came time for the Edwards family to actually interact with one of those Americans who is less well off, they showed their true colors. The story goes that one of John Edwards’ neighbors, a Republican, criticized, among other things, the size of Edwards’ home. In response John and his wife Elizabeth called the man’s property "slummy." So here is a presidential candidate who is claiming to be a champion of the people attacking his own neighbor who does not have the resources to build a “nice” (by Edwards’ standard) home. I guess the family does not want their friends to come over, look out the window, and not see other mansions surrounding the property.
Finally, this champion of the poor also spends $1,250 on a haircut. Now, under normal circumstances I would have no problem if someone wanted to pay that much for a haircut. That is their business. But when that same person is telling me I should pay more in taxes because the poor are suffering, I marvel at the hypocrisy.
John Edwards’ hypocrisy is yet another example of how rich liberals (like this guy, remember him?), having already made their millions, have no problem preventing others from making theirs or belittling others because they are not as rich as them. Raising taxes to pay for more failed government programs that seemingly help the poor, but in fact just make them dependant on government, is what Democrats want to accomplish. John Edwards is ultimately no different, even though his hypocrisy is second to none.
