Don’t Nationalize Health Care

Now that Michael Moore’s “documentary,” Sicko, has been released, there are more and more calls for politicians in America to nationalize, or take over, the health care system. Moore and others assert the other western countries that have adopted a nationalized system have much better health care than America.

Yet, as usual, when it comes to Moore and others who insist on more government control of health care, the facts do not back up their assertions. A central critique by Moore and others of our health care system is that we have millions of uninsured citizens. While that is true, the vast majority of those people are under 25 and likely will not need any significant health care treatment. It is not that the millions of uninsured cannot pay for health insurance. It is that they make the choice not to pay for something they simply will not need. Other countries that provide universal health care waste billions of tax dollars to insure young adults who will not need any treatment.

Moore and others also insist that people are “entitled to health care.” This kind of thinking sounds good in theory, but like most of the ideals of socialism, is fatal in practice. If everyone is entitled to all their health care, then why should anyone take care of themselves, if someone else will pay to make them better?

It is undisputed that America has the most advanced health care technology and creates almost every single new drug. This is the result of America adopting a (relatively) capitalist health care system that rewards individuals who discover cures and health care solutions. If the government were to take over the system, the doctors and businesses that are in the health care industry to make money will flee the system resulting in less new technology and new life-saving drugs.

Socialists also insist that other services, such as education, should never be privatized and should be provided “free” by the government. But such logic ignores reality. Education in this country, or anywhere else for that matter, is not free. Americans are taxed heavily, mainly through state property taxes, so that the government can provide education. In fact, America spends more money per pupil than any country on earth, but our children rank towards the bottom in achievement. Are the proponents of socialized medicine seriously going to use our education system as an example of how successful government control can be? I ask if the free market can provide a better product at a lower cost to society, why not let it rule?

The more government interferes with any part of the economy, the lower quality of the product produced. America needs less government interference in the health care system, not more. Just ask airline customers, parents of public school students, and any citizen of the high-tax countries that have embraced socialized medicine if they think they are getting their money’s worth.
