The Immigration Mess
Congress is now trying to pass legislation to deal with the immigration mess our country finds itself in. Our immigration system has been broken for decades because our government does not have the political courage to enforce our immigration laws and prosecute and deport some of the approximately 12 million illegal immigrants that currently reside within the borders of the United States of America. Individuals from around the world who wait patiently to come to America cannot do so because the immigration bureaucracy takes years to process their applications. Meanwhile, illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico, Central America, and South America cross our borders illegally and strain our welfare, health care, and education services. The problem is a big one, but the legislation that is currently being considered by Congress should be rejected as inadequate and insulting on its face.
One of the proposals in the current immigration bill is the granting of a “Z-visa” to all the illegal immigrants in this country. This, in essence, gives immediate legal status to all illegal immigrants without any real consequences. Supporters of the bill and the Z-visa contend that it is not amnesty because a fine of $5,000 must be paid. Yet if you actually read the bill you will discover that in order to receive Z-visa status no payment is necessary. The fine is only required if the immigrant wants to become a U.S. citizen. In other words to the 10 to 20 million lawbreakers that are in this country illegal will be given legal status without penalty. That is amnesty, pure and simple.
The bill contains no border security measures, other than those that are already the law and are not currently enforced. It is an attempt to grant legal status to those who did not show America the common courtesy by respecting its laws and to those who believe it is their right to be recognized as “de-facto” American citizens.
If you are interested in getting more information on this legislation, I recommend this video and this article. Both with explain in detail why this legislation should be defeated.
In addition these studies lay out the frightening effects and costs that the current immigration bill will have if it is passed.
The solution to this problem is simple: deploy the armed forces to the border, fine employers who employ non-legal citizens, and work to deport those who do not have a right to be in this country. Only after those steps have been completed can the country begin to discuss how to bring in potential workers. Once the border is secure, America can have an orderly process by which those who want to work in this country can do so.
But the political class in this country, including President Bush, most of the Democratic Party and a large number of Republicans, simply do not understand that the American people will not accept amnesty and are demanding that the border be secured before any legal status is granted to illegal immigrants. This legislation is an insult to all the legal immigrants who came to this country by playing by the rules and to every other American who pays for the costs illegal immigration.
