"If You Voted For Bush, You're An Idiot"

The left has always characterized Republicans and Republican presidents as morons, especially conservatives like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. But the left keeps losing elections to these idiots, so how stupid can Republicans really be? The left and the Democratic party will have a hard time coming back into power unless they admit the exceptionalism of America. It should not be debatable that America has freed and promoted democracy for millions of people, has allowed people of all races and ethnicities to prosper, has raised the standard of living for everyone around the globe, and is the single greatest force for good on the planet. But the left and the Democratic party in general simply does not believe that is true. They simply don't like America and want to see it fail. Disagree? Then do you think Michael Moore likes America? He obviously doesn't and yet he was invited to the Democratic National Convention, was greeted as a rock star, and sat next to a former Democratic president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. He was embraced by the Democratic party, not shunned.

After a decade of losing elections to the Republican party, the left and the Democratic party are at a cross-roads and it seems they have decided to do the intelligent and sophisticated thing: they're going to name-call. Instead of re-examining their political positions or trying to convince Americans that they have better ideas, they call the 60 million people who voted for Bush uninformed, stupid, or just plain mean. Some examples:

Jane Smiley: Why Americans Hate Democrats—A Dialogue: The unteachable ignorance of the red states.
http://slate.msn.com/id/2109218/

"Listen to what the red state citizens say about themselves, the songs they write, and the sermons they flock to. They know who they are—they are full of original sin and they have a taste for violence."

Brian Reade in the Mirror, a British newspaper, calls Bush voters:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/tm_objectid=14832124%26method=full%26siteid=50143%26headline=god%2dhelp%2damerica-name_page.html

"the frightened and clueless...self-righteous, gun-totin', military lovin', sister marryin', abortion-hatin', gay-loathin', foreigner-despisin', non-passport ownin' red-necks...who hijack the word patriot and liken compassion to child-molesting."

Liberal hate speech has become prominent, even cool, in liberal circles. Former Vice President Al Gore referred to GOP activists as "brown shirts." Newsday columnist Hugh Pearson likened the Republican National Convention to the "Nazi rallies held in Germany during the reign of Adolph Hitler." Linda Ronstadt said that the Republican victory on Election Day meant "we've got a new bunch of Hitlers." Chuck Turner, a Boston city councilor, smeared National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as "a tool of white leaders," like "a Jewish person working for Hitler." Chevy Chase, hosting a People for the American Way awards slammed Bush as "an uneducated, real, lying schmuck." A cartoon by the syndicated Ted Rall described Pat Tillman, who gave up his NFL career to enlist in the Army and was then killed in Afghanistan, as a "sap" and an "idiot." A political flier in Tennessee, depicting Bush as a mentally disabled sprinter, bore the message: "Voting for Bush is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded." The St. Petersburg, Fla., Democratic Club took out an ad calling for the death of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq, `We have our good days and our bad days,' " the ad read. "We should put this S.O.B. up against a wall and say, `This is one of our bad days,' and pull the trigger."

I could give you 100 more examples of leftist hate speech, but on a higher level (if that's possible) their message is simple: we lost, but we only lost because Bush voters are too stupid to vote for Democrats. But I won't waste your time because there is something more important at issue here and that is the inability of Democrats to convert people to their cause.

You might be surprised to know that I encourage these rants. I think they are good because they show how little the left and the Democratic party in America have left to say. They aren't trying to persuade people with their ideas, they don't engage the American people in a dialogue to bring them over to their side: they just insult the people that they disagree with. But why is this? Why do Democrats insult the people that they need to win elections?

For one thing, it is hard to make the case to Americans that they should have more abortions, endorse gay marriage, let the government confiscate 50% of their earnings, or claim that United Nations is the best hope for freedom and democracy around the world. But more importantly the insults show that the American left is losing to conservatives in the marketplace of ideas. The Democratic party has been reduced to name calling, while conservatives have a solution to the problems facing America. Whether it's Social Security or the war on terrorism the Republican party has a proposal. You personally may not agree with the solution, but conservatives have more to say on the matter other than hurling insults. Social Security going bankrupt? Let younger workers have their own private accounts. Islamic terrorists threatening to destroy America? Take the fight to them in the Middle East. Democrats on the other hand have become the do-nothing party. Social Security going bankrupt? Don't change a thing. Islamic terrorists threatening to destroy America? Pay no mind. It is a sad state of affairs when, on most issues, one political party's response to the other after hearing their proposals is "You're an idiot."

The liberal media is at a loss for real worlds to describe the reasons for the outcome of the 2004 elections. The bastion of the liberal media, The New York Times, has turned to its writers to articulate that the election results diminish the greatness of America. Some examples; Garry Wills: “We now resemble [Europe] less than we do our putative enemies . . . al Qaeda [and] Saddam Hussein’s Sunni loyalists.” Thomas Friedman: The Bush people “have used . . . religious energy to promote divisions and intolerance at home and abroad.” Maureen Dowd: “jihad in America. . . . One party controls all power. . . . One nation dominates the world.”

In academia liberals are also trying to find reasons to why liberalism lost in 2004. George Lakoff, a linguistics professors from the University of California at Berkley, says that "conservatives, especially conservative think tanks, have framed virtually every issue from their perspective. They have put a huge amount of money into creating the language for their worldview and getting it out there." In other words it is the language that conservatives use that allow them to be elected, not the positions that they hold that allow then to succeed in politics. This is amazing and is just another example of how little respect liberals have for the intelligence of the ordinary American. They refuse to believe that Americans are not liberals. They think that Americans vote for Republicans because they are being tricked by provocative language and are too stupid to realize it.

I am encouraged by the election results but I am even more encouraged by the reaction of "progressive America" to said results. That is why when I hear Hollywood or a college professor insult conservatism or America, I laugh; because I know that they have nothing better to say.
